"namakubi" means freshly served head. In battle,the winning side would collect heads of their enemies and present them to their leader. dying in battle was considered a virtue,and the higher the rank of the defeated,the more respectfully they would be displayed. Namakubi represent respect for one’s enemies, as well as courage, acceptance of fate and divinity

"生首(なまくび)" とは胴体に繋がっていない下から上の部分である。 当時の戦では、討ち取った大将の生首を自陣に持ち帰る事で、自身の手柄を証明し、持ち帰った生首達を位が高い順に並べ敵への敬意を表しました。同時に「これほどの強敵を倒した」と確認することで味方の士気を高める事ができるため。現在では魔除け、勇気、運命などを表すとされています。
